Investors bet big on "freemium" business model for iPhone apps

the iPhone app developers who are embracing the freemium business model are the ones attracting serious capital. All of the developers that comprise the $100 million Kleiner Perkins iFund - which invests exclusively in companies that make applications for the iPhone and iPad development platforms - participate in in-app commerce, said partner Matt Murphy. 

"Freemium is the model of the future," said Murphy, in an interview earlier this year. "It's all about finding a mass audience and learning how to monetize it. There will be a lot of experimentation around this." 

Murphy added that games are not the only types of iPhone applications that will succeed by offering free initial downloads and then further transaction opportunities down the road. He pointed to utility apps as well as the iconic music identification app Shazam (which applies charges after five music tags per month) as wider examples of in-app commerce.

These iPhone apps will get you geared up for the 2010 MLB season

iPhone apps released for the upcoming season, and rest assured that the current trickle of iPhone apps will soon be a flood.

I've long been a proponent of MyFantasyTeams, an iPhone app that provides access to Yahoo! fantasy sports, including baseball, football, hockey and basketball. It's not exactly a new iPhone app, but the beauty of it is that you won't need an updated version to work for this year's leagues.

The iPhone app provides most of your fantasy league options in a well-designed format, and it's much easier to use and more pleasant to look at than viewing the site via Safari. Last year Yahoo! released official baseball and football iPhone apps that almost do the same thing, though both apps were unfortunately limited and didn't allow you to do things such as view other team's rosters.

The fact that MyFantasyTeams works across multiple sports and seasons makes it a bargain at $3.99. If you don't believe me, check out the free lite version, though be warned it doesn't let you do things such as edit your lineup.

Yoga In Bed iPhone app a great way for beginners to achieve nirvana

iPhone app is the yoga alarm clock.  You can choose between any of the four audio clips to awaken or start your practice to. Like any good yoga teacher, this iPhone app encourages you through audio clips, which range from 12 to 40 minutes, to slow down and take the time for your yoga practice. Be aware of this when purchasing, as I was quite surprised to find so much recorded material.

In-app purchasing would be very well suited to the next version of the iPhone app, as I'd like to be able to download more content, as the replay value of much of the audio is likely not very high.

I would have preferred the iPhone app's recordings to be a little more natural in feel and flow, but the instructions themselves are simply first-rate. It's clear that Johnna knows yoga through her own experience in practice and in teaching. Therefore, this is a great introductory audio yoga class in bed or out of it. The instructions are easy to understand with a minimum of Sanskrit terms for beginners, and has enough excellent material, although often oddly voiced, to get your morning or evening yoga practice started.
