Handheld Activism : Lawyers, Guns & Money

David at It's Not a Lecture has some interesting thoughts on iPhone apps and activism:

Tech-savvy and issue-conscious consumers will be getting information not only about how a given product is a buck cheaper down the road or online, but also anything a database of that consumer's choosing says about the product, brand, or company. And remember, this information comes just moments before the point of purchase, giving the company almost no time to share its side of the story. So when I tried Good Guide I learned that the makers of my breakfast cereal “violated the Clean Water Act.” I never got a link to the company's explanation.

So think about the databases out there. Think about current events and politics. It's not just review sites/apps like Yelp (dealing with a somewhat iffy reputation lately). It's not hard to imagine a mobile app that tells you:

• If the CEO of the company that made a product contributed to Proposition 8 (Human Rights Campaign could probably tell you)
• If the manufacturer is headquartered in Arizona, where you can now be pulled over for looking Hispanic (I'm thinking National Council of La Raza might be interested)
• If a company is a “union buster” (just a matter of time before SEIU launches this bad boy)
• Class action lawsuits filed against a company (ATLA, anyone?)

Building a comprehensive, accurate, and huge database for mobile apps to access takes time, talent, and resources. Even the Red Laser database isn't all-encompassing. However, it's not nearly as hard as it used to be. Some database developers may sacrifice a bit of accuracy to get more volume or speed. Some will probably be built by crowdsourcing – my favorite crowdsourced database comes from the brainiacs at Cornell who helped put the Great Backyard Bird Count online. In the not-too-distant future, government databases will be accessible from your phone – a company's EDGAR filings with the SEC, actions brought by the EPA, and so on.

Distimo Data: 3,437 iPad Exclusives Now Available, iPhone Apps Still Growing Strong - iSmashPhone iPhone Blog

Distimo, an App Store analytics company, has revealed their figures for April 2010, the month of the iPad's launch (April 3rd). 

The figures show that App developers are quickly jumping on the iPad. As of April 26, 3,437 Apps were already available exclusively for the device. That's right, these aren't iPhone or iPod Touch Apps; these are just for the iPad. If you factor in Apps that are available across both platforms, it comes out to 4,870. 

The iPhone is also seeing continued growth as 184,981 Apps are available and the data shows continued growth through the month of April.

AppleInsider | Developer says iPad downloads are 5% of iPhone share on App Store

A developer with chart-topping free games for both the iPhone and iPad has shared download figures for each platform, revealing his iPad application was downloaded about 5 percent as much as a comparable game available for the much larger audience of the iPhone and iPod touch.

Michael Buford of Headlight Software Inc. updated his personal blog on Friday to share download figures for two free applications from the company Knife Dancing for the iPhone and Heads Up: Hold'em HD for the iPad. Knife Dancing was the No. 1 free iPhone game in February, with about 165,000 downloads in a single day, while Heads Up became the No. 1 iPad game on Thursday, with 8,300 downloads in one day.

New Data on Apple App Store for iPad and iPhone Apps « ZUMGI

This monthly report focuses on the Apple App Store for the iPad and iPhone in the United States. The major findings are:

• The number of applications in the Apple App Store for iPad has grown to 4,870 since the release of the iPad on April 3rd. In the last two weeks alone, the number of iPad applications has grown by 32.7%.
• The largest application category on the iPad is Games with 1,577 titles (32%), followed by Entertainment and Books with 455 and 396 titles, respectively.
• Of the 186,414 applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone, 73% are paid, while 80% of the 4,870 applications in the Apple App Store for iPad are paid.
• An application in the Apple App Store for iPhone costs $3.82 on average, as opposed to $4.67 in the Apple App Store for iPad.
• On the Apple App Store for iPad, Medical and Finance applications are the most expensive at $42.11 and $18.48 on average, respectively. This is significantly more than the average price for applications in these categories on the Apple App Store for iPhone ($10.74 and $5.74).

Textie for iPhone Sends Free Text Messages [Iphone Apps]

Textie is a free iPhone application that sends free text messages to email addresses, most cellphones, and other Textie users. Textie doesn't dip into your monthly messaging plan, so it's basically unlimited texting.

While it may be free on your end, it may not be for your recipient, especially if you are texting to a mobile number. There's also support for push notification and photos. The interface is reminiscent of the iPhone's own messaging app, so it's easy and quick to understand how the app functions.

Textie doesn't work well with T-Mobile (it really doesn't), and has no support for international numbers or Google Voice, which is a shame, really. Textie is a free app for iPhone only. It costs $2 to remove the ads.
